What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a hand-painted colour technique where lightener is freehand-swept onto the surface of the hair. Because the lightener is applied openly, exposed to air rather than sealed away, it processes more gently — which sounds appealing, but in practice means less lift.
The result tends to be a subtler, softer lightness rather than a bright, clean blonde.
This is exactly why balayage has fallen out of favour as the default choice for mo
Foiling techniques we use to create a lived-in look
- Teasy lights — a foiling technique that softens the regrowth line and blends colour more organically through the root area
- Babylights — fine, delicate foils that mimic the natural, sun-kissed highlights hair picks up as a child, built up in soft layers for dimension
- Customised zone toning — rather than one all-over toner, we tone different zones of the hair individually, allowing us to create a seamless graduation of tone from root to end.
Combined, these techniques give you the natural, blended, lived-in blonde that balayage is loved for — but with the lighter, cleaner lift that only a foiling technique with trapped heat can deliver.
What Are Foils?
Foils involve sectioning hair and applying lightener to individual pieces, which are then wrapped and sealed in foil. That foil isn’t just there to keep things tidy — it traps heat against the hair, and that trapped heat is what allows the lightener to lift the hair lighter and cleaner than an open-air technique ever could.
The other misconception is that foils only create a stark, uniform blonde. In reality, it’s the foiling technique — not foils versus balayage — that determines the finished look. With the right approach, foils can absolutely create that same soft, “lived-in” blonde that balayage is known for, while still achieving a lighter, cleaner lift.
The Key Differences at a Glance
| BALAYAGE | FOILS | |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Hand-painted, open-air | Sectioned and sealed in foil |
| Lift achieved | Subtler, softer lightness | Lighter, cleaner lift (heat is trapped by the foil) |
| Can it look "lived-in"? | Yes, but limited by lower lift | Yes, via teasy lights, babylights and customised zone toning |
| Regrowth | Soft, gradual | Softened through technique and zone toning, not just placement |
Because a skilled foiling technique can replicate everything clients love about balayage — softness, dimension, a natural grow-out — while also delivering better lift and cleaner colour, most of our clients get more out of a well-placed foil service than a traditional balayage.
Choosing the Right Technique for Your Hair
There’s still no universally “right” answer for every client — the right choice depends on your natural colour, hair texture, how much lift you’re after, and the specific look you want. What works beautifully for one client’s hair type might not be the right fit for another, which is why we always assess this individually at a consultation rather than following whatever’s trending.
Our stylists will look at:
- Your natural base colour and how much lift is needed
- Your hair’s condition and how much processing it can handle
- The finished look you’re chasing — soft and lived-in vs bright and bold
- Which foiling technique (teasy lights, babylights, or a full foil) and toning approach will get you there
Aftercare Applies to Both
Regardless of which technique you choose, protecting your investment afterwards matters just as much as the technique itself — professional, prescriptive products, regular toning, and UV protection all help your blonde stay fresh for longer between visits. (Living on the Sunshine Coast, watch out for chemical sunscreens containing avobenzone, which can shift blonde tones pink or orange — a mineral, zinc oxide sunscreen is the safer choice for your colour.)
