Which Hair Extension Method Is Right for You?
If you’ve been dreaming of longer, fuller, more luxurious hair, you’ve probably come across the three main extension methods we offer here at Coastal Blondes — keratin bonds, tapes, and wefts. But which one is actually right for you?
The honest answer is: it depends on your hair, your lifestyle, and the look you’re chasing. That’s exactly why an in-person consultation is mandatory for every new extension client — your hair is individual, and your extensions should be too. But to help you walk in feeling informed, here’s our straight-talking breakdown of all three.
First, a myth we love to bust: extensions don’t have to damage your hair. When they’re applied correctly and properly maintained, they can actually support your hair’s health — we’ve seen it time and time again. The damage people fear comes from tension, poor application, and skipped maintenance, not from extensions themselves. Get those right, and you’re golden.
Now, let’s compare.
Keratin bonds are our most popular method, and for good reason. Small, keratin-based bonds are attached to your natural hair using a specialised heating tool, creating a secure, seamless blend. They’re the most customisable option we offer, which is a huge deal for blondes — we can use multiple colours within a single install to match the highs and lows in foiled blonde hair, so no one can tell where your hair ends and the extensions begin.
They’re also wonderfully low maintenance. Once installed, there’s no regular salon upkeep beyond a quick two-week check to make sure they’re sitting correctly, and then a removal or reapplication at around the 12-week mark depending on your hair type and growth. For busy lifestyles, that convenience is hard to beat.

- All hair types — fine, medium and thick
- Filling in gaps
- Adding volume and length
- Minimal salon maintenance
- Lasting 3–6 months
A quick note … because keratin bonds are so individualised, we can’t quote a price over the phone or by message. You’ll get a personalised quote at your consultation.
Tape-ins are a lightweight, discreet way to add volume, length and thickness. Ultra-thin, clear adhesive tapes are applied close to the roots, blending in for a virtually undetectable finish. They’re quick to apply and easy to live with, which makes them a favourite for anyone wanting a low-profile, fuss-free look.
The trade-off is maintenance frequency. Tapes need reapplication every 6–7 weeks — and delaying that appointment can lead to matting or stress on your natural hair, so staying on schedule matters. The upside is that with proper care, the hair itself can be reused for up to 12 months.

Wefts give you a fuller, more dramatic result. We use both Classic Weft and Invisible Weft with our flat-track method: beads secure the foundation, then the weft is sewn onto your natural hair for a strong, secure hold with no visible tracks and minimal discomfort.
Classic (machine) wefts are made by sewing bundles of hair together by machine, creating a thicker, denser, more durable band — ideal if you have thicker hair or you’re after serious volume. Like tapes, wefts need reapplication every 6–7 weeks, and the hair can be reused for up to 12 months with proper care. One tip we often give: adding a few keratin bonds at the front can help fill any gaps the weft can’t reach.

What We See Most Often In The Salon
At Coastal Blondes, we find that clients with fine hair typically achieve the most natural result with tape extensions, while clients wanting maximum fullness often prefer wefts. Keratin bonds remain our most popular choice for clients seeking a long-lasting, highly customised result.
Which Hair Extension Method Do We Recommend?
But honestly, the best method is the one chosen for your specific hair by someone who knows what they’re doing. That’s where we come in.
We only use Remy A+ hair with the cuticle intact — no matting, no nasty surprises — and after years of testing brands against the harsh Sunshine Coast environment, we’ve found the ones that hold up beautifully without compromising on quality.
