Hair Extensions Aftercare: Everything You Need to Know

You’ve invested in beautiful, natural-looking hair extensions — now let’s make sure they stay that way. Proper aftercare doesn’t just keep your extensions looking salon-fresh for longer, it protects your natural hair underneath and extends the life of your investment. As hair extension educators and Mooloolaba’s leading hair extension salon, we talk our clients through aftercare at every single appointment. Here’s the complete guide.

Why Aftercare Matters So Much

Hair extensions — whether keratin bonds, tape-ins, or wefts — are attached to your natural hair, which means how you treat them directly affects both how long they last and the health of your own hair underneath. Good aftercare habits can mean the difference between extensions that move seamlessly through a 6–8 week cycle, and ones that slip, tangle, or cause unnecessary strain on your natural hair.

Washing Your Extensions

  • Wash hair extensions less frequently than you might your natural hair — every 2–3 days is usually plenty
  • Always use a professional shampoo and conditioner designed for extensions or coloured hair – –
  • Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends only — avoid the bonds or tapes themselves, as heavy conditioner and oils near the attachment point can cause slippage
  • Wash hair upright in the shower rather than tipping your head upside down, which can cause tangling at the root

How to brush extensions correctly:

  1. Start at the ends and work out any tangles first

  2. Hold the section at the roots to take the pressure off the attachment point while you brush

  3. Work your way up to the roots in sections

  4. Brush gently around bonds rather than dragging straight through them

  5. Only brush near the bonds when hair is completely dry — brushing near attachment points on wet hair puts extra strain on the bonds and can weaken them over time

Brushing: The Non-Negotiable Daily Habit

Brushing is the single most important daily habit for extension longevity. We recommend brushing at least twice a day — morning and night — using a proper extension-safe brush.

For our keratin bond clients specifically, we recommend the Curated Hair extension brush. Its design is built to gently separate individual bonds as you brush, which keeps them from matting together and significantly reduces the amount of in-salon maintenance needed between appointments.

Sleeping With Extensions

  • Loosely braid your hair or tie it into a low, soft ponytail before bed
  • Consider a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and tangling overnight
  • Never go to bed with wet hair — extensions (and bonds especially) take longer to dry and can tangle or mat if slept on damp
  • Always use a heat protectant before styling
  • Keep hot tools at an optimal heat of 180°C — extension hair doesn’t need to withstand the same heat as regrowth
  • Avoid heavy oils or silicone-based products directly on bonds or tape attachment points, as they can cause premature slipping

Living on the Sunshine Coast, most of our clients are in and out of the ocean or the pool regularly. A few extra precautions go a long way:

  • Rinse hair with fresh water before and after swimming
  • Tie hair up to minimise tangling in salt water or chlorine
  • Use a leave-in conditioner or extension-safe UV protectant before a beach day

When to Book Your Maintenance Appointment

Most clients need a maintenance appointment every 6–8 weeks, depending on hair growth and extension method. This is when your stylist checks and adjusts wefts or tapes, addresses any movement, and makes sure everything remains comfortable and secure. Don’t wait until extensions feel loose or start slipping — regular maintenance protects your natural hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tapes and wefts can typically be reused for around 12 months with proper care. Keratin bonds, however, cannot be reused — their lifespan depends on your own hair's growth cycle, and generally lasts anywhere from 3–6 months.
We recommend avoiding regular, non-professional shampoos and heavy silicones, as these can dry out extension hair and cause build-up around bonds. Instead, use a professional haircare formula that's more moisture-based — extension hair needs extra hydration since it no longer receives natural oils from the scalp.
Not brushing often enough. Skipping even a day or two of brushing can lead to matting at the bonds, which is uncomfortable and can shorten the life of your extensions.
